After you shall have read this, perhaps you will want to set aside enough time to personally visit Andrew T. Orais, a doctor of veterinary medicine at the regional office of the Department of Agriculture in Tacloban highly urbanized city. Dr. Orais can provide every interested individual with in-depth information on why the Waray should now go heavily into goat raising. Second increase of barangay honoraria takes effect January 1, 2011

You might not have noticed it, but barangay personnel who are paid monthly honoraria are also enjoying an increase in their honoraria. The second round of the increase will be effective January 1, 2011. This is pursuant to Executive Order No. 900 which was issued by the Department of Budget and Management on June 23, 2010, mandating the implementation of the second tranche of the modified Salary Schedule for civilian personnel, among others, under the Senate and House of Representatives [...]

‘Bantay Basay’ by Dido C. Tabao

‘Bantay Basay’ by Dido C. Tabao

A four-page reading material, which I henceforth call a newsletter, reached my hands this week as I was making a follow-up for the upcoming Third General Assembly of Baktas Kabub’wason Rural Workers Association cum Training on Natural Farming Systems and Technology” (slated for September 24, at the elementary school in barrio Sawa, Basey, Samar, to be conducted by Kaisampalad Inc.) This material bears a name - BANTAY BASAY - given by Dido C. Tabao, who, if I’m 1000 per cent correct is [...]

3 Samar provinces from Samar province?

3 Samar provinces from Samar province?

There likely will be five provinces from out of the island of Samar which presently has 3 provinces – Samar (Western Samar), Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar. The 2 new provinces that may be added in the future will be, one, that may be known as “Northwestern Samar” and two, “Southwestern Samar”. The new provinces may come out of the existing province of Samar. Call it gerrymandering, but the moves towards a triple provincehood is now more real than a mere liking by politicians. [...]

Agriculture Secretary Alcala’s good tidings for the Waray coco industry

Agriculture Secretary Alcala’s good tidings for the Waray coco industry

There’s much money in the government’s daily lotteries. Between 1995 and July 29, 2010, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office paid out a total of Php 26,071,057,584.67! Yes, over 26 billions of pesos! And you know what? That much money went to 1,513 jackpot winners! You could just imagine how very lucky those winners had been! You’d salivate if that jackpot cash gets before your eyes and your eyes alone. But, most likely you’d not at once know what to do with that amount. [...]

Music is a crowd-getter

Music is a crowd-getter

Melodious or cacophonous, music draws attention. It attracts a crowd, and serves as a vehicle for the conveyance of important messages. In the last elections, at least two street corners at the downtown of the Eastern Visayas’ regional capital market repeatedly kept playing political jingles. Men and women, children and elders, rich or poor, walking or riding, turned their heads, ears and eyes towards the two sources of musical sounds that came alternately after one another. Whether or [...]

My idyll not-yet, inspired by DA’s Leo and Francis

My idyll not-yet, inspired by DA’s Leo and Francis

Phantast pictured in my mind a group of media practitioners undertaking information dissemination, advocacy and social marketing activities year-round based on an annual media capability plan or AMCAP.  There are several activities lined up in the AMCAP, each one with specific individual media practitioners or a group of media practitioners doing their best to accomplish the goals of each activity or attain the vision at the end of a certain period of time for an activity.  Since normally [...]

Practical approaches to climate change

Practical approaches to climate change

Today, the endless topic “climate change” and how it affects Filipino farmers, will be partly taken up when families surnamed Lancanan in the interior barrio of Villa Aurora, Basey, Samar, meet to plan for their next two years. Punong barangay Marito E. Lancanan has taken the initiative of calling the Lancanans to a meeting in his home at the barrio where their original roots come from. The Lancanans are among the few families who originally owned large tracts of farm lands in Villa [...]

Tuba-tuba planting still alive in Basey

Tuba-tuba planting still alive in Basey

Three years after massive Jatropha Curcas (Tuba-Tuba) shrub planting took place in Basey, Samar, the number of surviving shrubs could not anymore be estimated. As of July14, 2008, there were about 93,000 shrubs planted in 39 of Basey’s 51 barrios.  Included in the counting were those planted on vacant lots around homes in the poblacion. Teodorico D. Porbus, founding president of Baktas Kabub’wason Rural Workers Association, rendered his report thereon personally to chairman Renato [...]

Newest television network formally opens tomorrow in Tacloban

Newest television network formally opens tomorrow in Tacloban

Countryside Associated Television, or CAT for short, most likely formally begins its first broadcast right in Tacloban highly urbanized city, tomorrow, August 23. It was two o’clock last Monday morning when I chanced upon channel 8 on the cable tv service subscribed for our home in Tacloban. Its plugs suggested that the new channel would have sports casts and “hot news and events”. This was something else new on our home tv screen.  It wasn’t there before as CAT.  It used to be [...]
