The Ombudsman
The testimony of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales is the last nail to Chief Justice Renato Corona. She testified under oath that the Chief Justice had kept more than $12 million in 82 dollar accounts for a period of about 8 years. The testimony is backed by figures provided by the Anti-Money laundering Council (AMLC). Per the analysis of the COA, the fund inflows into the accounts reached as much as $28.7 million in the past 8 years. Where is the money coming from? Conchita Carpio Morales [...]
The budget airlines
The budget airline industry which made air travel more affordable for millions of Filipinos was the single biggest driving force for the domestic and international tourism industry over the last decade. This growth however, has come at a cost. The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) said it had seen a significant rise in passenger complaints nearly all of them directed at budget airlines. Most of the complaints involved flight delay, denial of boarding of passengers who arrived late. While [...]
Good Luck Erap!
After the smokescreen, it is now clear that former President Erap Estrada is vent on running for Mayor of Manila in 2013. Erap has officially transferred his residence from San Juan to Sta. Mesa, Manila. He transferred to the Sta. Mesa property that he bought from the Legarda family. He drove his “Jeep Ni Erap” vehicle used in previous election campaigns accompanied by Vice Mayor Isko Moreno and family members and supporters. Estrada’s move was clearly timed to meet the one-year [...]
The NAIA brawl
Movie and TV actor Raymart Santiago and veteran columnist Ramon Tulfo engaged in a fistfight at the NAIA Terminal 3 last Sunday. Santiago, his wife Claudine Barreto and several companions had just arrived from Boracay and were waiting for their luggage at the conveyor area when the incident happened. Claudine was getting impatient over the mishandled luggage and started reprimanding a female ground stewardess. Her luggage was left behind in Aklan but they were doing their best to load it in [...]
What a game
I watched last Sunday’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup Championship game between B-Meg Llamados and Talk N Text Tropang Texters on their 7th and penultimate game. It was one hell of a game, the most exciting championship game I have ever seen in PBA games. It was an amazing turned around for the B-Meg and sealed a 90-84 win to snatch the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the full-packed Smart Araneta Coliseum. Mind you, it was an overtime game forcing an overtime at 76 all. The hero of that game [...]
The PHL economy
The Philippine economy will expand by 5-6% in 2012, higher than the 3.7% growth posted in 2011. The government’s expenditure program is getting on track and economic indicators are looking good. ADB President Harakiko Kuroda said the Philippines is poised to weather the effects of mild recession in Europe but stressed the urgent need for countries to address the wide income inequality in their areas. The Philippines expects a bolter 5 to 6% GDP growth for 2012 not only because of strong [...]
The Scarborough dispute
We, as Filipinos should unite as one voice in our claim over Scarborough Shoal in order to show China that there are no doubts that it is part of our national territory. The move of the Philippine government to bring to the International Court of Justice its case is a good move to show that we abide by the rules of international relations to settle international disputes. Panatag Shoal is an integral part of Philippine territory as it is only 124 nautical miles from the nearest base point in [...]
The Philippine politics
Sometimes I wonder why so many people are interested to run for public office despite the odds, loss of privacy and lots of money to spend during election time. I would ask myself is it worth it? Politics leads to corruption still, many run for public office. I am not anymore sure if the candidates for public office have the sincere intention that they can do something good for their constituencies. One of the disadvantages of being in politics is the loss of your privacy. When you run for [...]
It’s Summer Time
Let’s beat the heat, it’s summer time. Expect our electricity bill to jack up along with the rising temperatures (35 to 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country). Aside from colds, some people suffer from heat exhaustion. People suffering from heat exhaustion must be taken under the shade and must elevate their feet a bit. Cool them down by applying cool compresses on the neck and armpits. Those suffering from heat exhaustion should be watched closely because heat exhaustion may [...]
Dirty Harry vs. Asiong Salonga
The capital city of the Philippines, Manila is preparing for the so-called “Battle of Manila” which means a battle of leadership for Manila between the incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim and Erap Estrada with the tag “Dirty Harry vs. Asiong Salonga,” an expected face-off between 2 controversial characters in 2012 Mayoral elections in Manila. “Dirty Harry” is of course the incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim who regained the Manila mayor’s seat after a failed try for the Presidency in 1998. In [...]
