In a recent interview reported in national newspapers, Secretary of Tourism Alberto A. Lim mentioned the need to get different agencies involved in tourism since the Department of Tourism (DOT) alone cannot improve the state of the tourism industry.
In the recent (August 2) meeting of the Visayas Regional Development Committee of the NEDA Board held in Iloilo City, a policy which favors road construction in the three provinces of Samar was endorsed.
The Regional Development Council has approved the adoption of a Regional Development Plan from 2011 to 2016. All its efforts in plan implementation are now geared towards the attainment of the objectives of this plan.
The emphasis on eco-tourism in this column has taken the reader to practically all parts of the region. There are, however, some places which have not been mentioned. One of them is the eastern part of Northern Samar.
Since January, this column has been devoted to eco-tourism in Eastern Visayas.
The quality of services provided to tourists is an important factor in tourism promotion. It may be useful to write more on this in today’s issue.

It is noteworthy and laudable for the Department of Tourism to have conducted last February regional consultations on the national tourism development plan.
Based on the data provided to this writer by the Department of Tourism Regional Office headed by Ms. Karina Rosa Tiopes, there are several issues and concerns confronting the tourism industry in Eastern Visayas which were mentioned during the consultation on the National Tourism Plan held last February 21, 2011. Issues on product development were mentioned in last week’s column.
