Season of Penance
Ash Wednesday, which the entire Roman Catholic Church celebrates this day, marks the beginning of the Season of Penance. During the Lenten Season catechumens and faithful celebrate the paschal mystery – Jesus Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection, with a color of penance and penitence. To start with this remembrance of this mystery, people are reminded with these words as ashes are placed on their forehead during the Ash Wednesday Eucharistic celebration, “You are dust and to dust [...]
Ormoc road rehabilitation
This year is supposed to see the major rehabilitation of some Tacloban-Ormoc portions of Maharlika Highway, one of the most awaited projects so far not just by the nearby residents but also by those who frequent this road on the way to Cebu and vice versa, knowing that Cebu is a frequent destination of Eastern Visayans. As can be noted, the needed repairs just cannot wait anymore. Portions of the road had already deteriorated. The cracks were big, the holes deep, that they can send a [...]
For how long would this trial still go?
The nation’s focus has been riveted at watching the historic event – the first in Philippine jurisprudence that of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona. For the past 19 trial days (as of Thursday) we had the opportunity to increase our knowledge on the intricacies of law. Both camps – tried to impose their own interpretation of laws – proving the guilt of the accused to elicit conviction from the prosecution teams and the sometime entertaining banter [...]
Banning plastics in Leyte
Leyte will soon become plastic-free. And Mother Nature would surely smile as soon as the ban is imposed in the entire province. While the ordinance is not yet effective, the provincial board members have urged local government units to start limiting the use of plastic bags, styrofoam, styrofor, and similar packaging materials as early as possible. Actually, there are local government units such as Calbayog and Maasin cities that had their own ordinances banning plastic bags on [...]
The mismatch of college courses to current demands
At last, authorities have turned their attention on the issue of college courses which have proliferated in our schools without thought on whether these fit in to the global and local demands. As early as eight to ten years ago, the Regional Development Council No. 08 has already voiced out its concern on how Philippine colleges and universities are producing graduates whose courses and degrees are not what the country needs. There was a common consensus to make the necessary adjustments but [...]
Falsehoods
Concealment had been the best defense tactic in the impeachment trial. Efforts to ferret out the truth had consistently been waylaid by technical maneuverings that keeps the truth from being bared. Witnesses had been protecting their own personal agenda to the extent of hiding the truth that are up to be culled out of their pits. Telling details contained in bank documents are being kept well guarded by bank officials who are bent on hiding significant information needed by the impeachment [...]
Rated XXX
Whenever a rape-slay incident happens, people easily blame it to drugs the suspect might have been using, or to alcohol the culprit is under the influence of, or to mere lust the attacker is overwhelmed with. Seldom do people blame it to the proliferation of pornographic materials that give the perpetrators nice ideas to imitate. Nowadays when lewd pictures and videos have become easily accessible in the Internet with its thousands of xxx-rated websites, the minds of boys who browse said [...]
Spending beyond means
It was the most popular term during the impeachment trial on CJ Renato Corona in the past weeks. The Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) which all public servants – from the rank and file to the top honcho in the bureaucracy are supposed to submit annually, had been the talk of the town. CJ was accused of not declaring in his SALN some of his properties but which allegation was reportedly not fully proved by the prosecution team in spite of the length of time allowed by the [...]
Inconsistent tax collection
If we compare tax collection between ordinary employees and those who are engaged in business, we will notice that there is inconsistency and unfairness. They are not being taxed fairly as the one cannot elude meticulous and even repeated taxation while the other one is eluding it with broad smiles on their faces and increasing cash in their pockets. On the part of employees or those working in offices, agencies, companies, etc., tax collections is something they cannot escape. It is [...]
