US Ambassador Harry Thomas does a “MacArthur”!
On October 20, 1944 when General Douglas MacArthur and the Allied Troops landed on the beaches of Leyte, he brought a resurgence of hope for all Filipinos that at last democracy had been restored in our country.

US Ambassador Harry Thomas, Jr. was joined by Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez (right), Leyte Governor Mimieta Bagulaya, and City Councilor Cristina G. Romualdez and former Mayor Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez during the reception dinner tendered by the city government for the visiting envoy at the Patio Victoria, March 1, 2013. Ambassador Thomas visited Tacloban City last March 1 to 3 for America in 3D—an outreach program of the US Embassy highlighting US culture and services in the country. Over these past six decades – with strained relations and other obstructions to the continued friendship of Americans and Filipinos – the arrival of Ambassador Thomas in Tacloban revived our dwindling hopes; he brought with him an exuberance of good will and diplomacy – showing to each and every Taclobanon and Leyteño – that the Americans have not forgotten us – their steadfast allies in the East. His Excellency, Ambassador Harry Thomas is the “ultimate diplomat”! Through his initiative, the roadshow “America in 3D” – has visited six cities in the Philippines – Tacloban the latest.
Our fellow Taclobanons and residents from all over Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) – eagerly trooped to Robinson’s Mall this weekend – to listen to and see the “Orient Express” – US 7th Fleet Rock Band – to the songs and dances performed by national and local artists – to the briefings re to how to apply for a US Visa – how to study in the US – concerns re human trafficking, development and defense plans of the United States particularly for our country and Southeast Asia. His staff tried “demystifying the Visa process” – meaning exposing alleged flaws in such a Consular act – ironing out kinks – providing further info re requirements for visa approval.
In toto – the “America in 3D” visit to Tacloban revived our belief in the fact that the United States of America is a friend – that it cares for us – that Americans and Filipinos are bound not only by bonds of friendship – our common history is etched in the blood of our soldiers who gave up their lives that democracy – in our country – and everywhere else in the world – will forever reign supreme.
To His Excellency, US Ambassador Harry Thomas – our sincerest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude! (Bernardita Valenzuela)
