BIR targets P6.05 B tax collection target this year
PALO, Leyte – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has announced a P6.05 billion tax collection target this year for Eastern Visayas, which is 33% higher than the previous year’s goal, prompting the tax agency to call for more cooperation from taxpayers.
BIR Regional Director Diosdado Mendoza admitted that the big jump of their goal is very challenging but they are counting on voluntary compliance among business owners.
“This is a gargantuan task but with the support of tax payers we can meet the goal. We must be open to new ideas, forge partnership with all stakeholders, and continue to innovate to solve difficult problems,” Mendoza said.
Despite big increase from the 2012 target, the revenue regional office here ranks fifth with the lowest target for 2013 among the 19 revenue regional offices of the bureau nationwide.
Of the P6.05 billion regional goal, P4.04 billion are income taxes, P1.49 billion are value-added tax, P12.43 million are excise taxes, P284.36 million for other taxes, and P223.02 million are percentage taxes.
Tacloban City revenue district office (RDO) in northern Leyte has the highest target at P2.64 billion, Ormoc City RDO in western Leyte (P1.10 billion), Catbalogan City RDO in Samar (P777.47 million), Catarman RDO in Northern Samar (P555.52 million), Borongan City RDO in Eastern Samar (P494.20 million), and Maasin City RDO in Southern Leyte (P486.33 million).
Mendoza said that for the month of January, the region was able to meet the P455.99 million target, which is an indication that 2013 is a good year for tax collection in the region.
Collection goal of BIR offices nationwide has increased by 17.59% from P1.06 trillion in 2012 to P1.25 trillion this year.
Tax take in Eastern Visayas has reached P4.74 billion in 2012, surpassing the P4.53 billion target by 5% and higher by 23% than the 2011 collection.
Mendoza said that the bureau recorded a surplus of P212.10 million from its target collection last year. The 2012 earnings is higher by P877.08 million than the P3.87 billion tax take the previous year.
Income taxes derived from wage adjustment was pegged at P496.13 million. The BIR also noted a P240.47 million withholding tax remittances on value added tax in 2012.
Income from increased infrastructure spending of the government contributed to P96.15 million more taxes last year.
All the six RDOs of BIR Eastern Visayas had collected more than what it got in 2011 with an rate of increase ranging from 12% to 39%. However, in terms of hitting the 2012 target, the Maasin City RDO in Southern Leyte missed the goal with a shortfall of only 4%. (Sarwell Q. Meniano)
