FDC opposes ULGPP privatization
TACLOBAN CITY – As one of their efforts to prevent the privatization of the remaining supply contract of the Unified Leyte Geothermal Power Plant (ULGPP) in Tongonan, Ormoc Leyte; the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC) conducted a FDC chapters media conference yesterday this year at the Ritz Tower de Leyte.
The said media conference were attended by Manjette Lopez, FDC national vice president; Jose Moven Ligahon, Ormoc City consumer representative; as well as representatives from FDC Bacolod, FDC Cebu, and FDC Eastern Visayas
“We are afraid that if the ULGPP remaining power plant supply contracts goes to the hand of the private sectors, the price of electricity all over Visayas will further shoot up,” said Ma. Lydia Ligahon from FDC Eastern Visayas
Ligahon added that they have also sought help of politicians in Leyte to support them in their campaign against the privatization of ULGPP.
“We have actually sought help from Gov. Jericho Petilla, and he assured us that he is willing to support us in our campaign against the privatization of ULGPP. We also approached Board Member Anlie Apostol and Councilor Wilson Uy regarding this matter,” he said.
FDC believes that the provincial government of Leyte must expedite action to shield the electric consumers from the consequent rise electricity cost brought about by the said privatization.
“FDC chapters in Visayas vows to intervene against ULGPP privatization,” Lopez, FDC national vice-president, said.
Lopez disclosed that they will be conducting fora and rallies in front of DOE offices to show how serious they are in preventing the privatization of the ULGPP. (Ailene M. Refuerzo & TIMOTEO s. AVELLANA JR., LNU ABCom Interns)
