Comelec: Filing of CoCs peaceful
TACLOBAN CITY—The week-long filing of certificates of candidacy (CoC0 in Eastern Visayas ended peacefully, according to an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Atty. Jose Nick Mendros said on Friday afternoon, October 5 was the official end of the period for filing of CoCs.
“The filing period was generally peaceful except for some minor incidents that caused problems,” Mendros said.
He cited the incident in Rosario, Northern Samar where the election officer prevented a person from submitting a CoC because the authorization he was carrying was only written on a yellow pad.
Another incident was in Salcedo, Eastern Samar where the election officer reportedly refused to accept the CoC of a candidate because it was already beyond the 5:00 pm deadline last October 5.
“We are validating all these incidents,” Mendros said.
“We hope that the 2013 campaign period would be as peaceful even we anticipate the local races to be marred by family feuds and prolonged political rivalries,” Mendros added.
The Comelec regional office is yet to assess the number of local candidates that have filed their respective CoCs.
In Eastern Visayas, candidates are seeking public office for 12 congressional districts, six provinces, six cities and 136 municipalities. (REYAN L. ARINTO)
