Candidates start filing of COCs at Comelec offices

TACLOBAN CITY— Several politicians have filed yesterday their certificates of candidacy for the 2013 elections before offices of the Commission of Elections (Comelec).

Yesterday was the first day of filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) and the Comelec has until Oct. 5 to accept COCs of congressional, provincial and municipal candidates in the 2013 midterm polls. 

Leyte fourth district Representative Lucy Marie Torres-Gomez yesterday formalized her re-election bid for the 2013 midterm elections as she filed her certificate of candidacy (CoC) before the Comelec-Leyte provincial office.

 Rep. Gomez was one of the “early birds” when Comelec opened and started to accept CoCs for those who will be running in the 2013 midterm elections.

 “We took the early morning flight from Manila so we decided to drop by the provincial Comelec office before we go straight to Ormoc where Richard [Gomez] and his team will file their CoCs today,” Gomez said.

 “I want to continue what I have done in my first term and I feel that I am in an even better position to do that. I am very inspired by the leadership of the President and I have a lot of dreams for the district I represent,” Gomez added.

 The lady solon was accompanied by her husband, father Manuel Torres and brother Manuel Vicente “Matt” Torres III, who is also running for mayor in Kananga, Leyte.

 “I am confident that I will win because I am running on a platform of performance and I really done well in the district,” Gomez said.

 Leyte’s fourth district is composed of Ormoc City and the municipalities of Isabel, Palompon, Kananga, Merida, Matag-ob and Albuera.

 Gomez said she has the backing of the incumbent mayors of Albuera, Palompon, Matag-ob, Isabel and Merida.

 The Gomezes are running under the Liberal Party (LP).

 Later in the afternoon, Leyte first district Rep. Ferdinand Martin “FM” Romualdez filed his CoC after attending a Mass with party supporters in his hometown Tolosa.

 Rep. Romualdez is running under Lakas.

 In Tacloban City, Councilor Jerry Yaokasin was the first to file his certificate of candidacy for city vice mayor before the City Comelec office.

Yaokasin is running independent and will challenge incumbent Vice Mayor Arvin Antoni and still undisclosed candidate of Mayor Alfred Romualdez.

 An Waray party-list Rep. Florencio “Bem” Noel is expectd to file his CoC today, Oct. 2, as city mayor along with his party-mates.

 In Eastern Samar, incumbentGovernor Conrado Nicart, Jr. and Borongan City councilor Emmanuel Tiusongco filed their CoCs as governor and vice governor, respectively.

 Guiuan town Mayor Annaliza Kwan also filed her CoC for representative of Eastern Samar’s lone district. She will be challenging Rep. Ben Evardone.

 Supporters of Nicart, Tiusongco and Kwan held a caravan with supporters around Borongan before proceeding to the provincial elections office to file their respective CoCs.

In Biliran province, Rep. Rogelio Espina and his brother Governor Gerardo “Gerry Boy” Espina, Jr. both filed their CoCs yesterday for the same position. (REYAN L. ARINTO)
