Roxas is new DILG chief – reports

MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III has chosen Transportation and Communications Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas as the new Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) chief, reports said.

ABS-CBN news agency on Friday said Roxas, who is currently the president of the Liberal Party (LP), will replace Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash last August 18.

Reports added that Cavite Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya will take over Roxas’ post at the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).

Abaya, President Aquino’s schoolmate at the Ateneo de Manila University, was earlier eyed to succeed Robredo.

Abaya, who is currently the LP secretary-general, was Roxas’ number one choice for the DILG post, earlier reports added.

Other supposed candidates to the DILG post are Senator Panfilo Lacson, former Isabela governor Grace Padaca, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Lacson is not a member of the ruling party but he enjoys the trust of the President being Aquino’s close friend when they were still colleagues in the Senate.

The President will officially announce Robredo’s successor before he leaves on September 7 for Russia for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, Malacañang said Wednesday. (Sunnex)
