Earthquakes in the Bible

Doms Pagliawan

With the frequent occurrences now of devastating calamities all over the world, some of which occurring in places where they do not normally take place, people’s attentions are drawn to sources of information that could provide them with answers as to why these things are unfolding when, in times past, it would take decades or even a century before an intense catastrophe happened.

Scientific explanations could readily shed light on every disastrous phenomenon, of course, but people suspect some more reasons exist, that’s why they resort to the Bible, the supreme authority on spiritual and prophetical matters, for answers, and they don’t get disappointed indeed. This book satisfies their hunger for knowledge particularly about things spiritual, and that persistent curiosity about what will happen in the future.

Why have powerful earthquakes become so frequent throughout the world when, based on verifiable records, this is not the case? Such a query samples the people’s inquisitiveness nowadays. Science can explain how these tremors occur, but as to their frequency, it goes mum. But if we will turn to the Bible, we will learn that, based on Christ’s answer to the disciples’ query, these are sings of His second coming. “…there shall be…earthquakes in diverse places,” He said (Matt. 24:7). That earthquakes are getting frequent, then, is a fulfillment of prophecy signaling Christ’s return to earth.

In fact, if we will research Bible prophecy further, we can almost say that these powerful earthquakes are just a prelude to that forthcoming greatest earthquake prophesied in the book of Revelation 16:18-20. “…and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: ..And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken” (Matt. 24:29).

These are just some of the passages that detail colossal catastrophes that would take place prior to Christ’s physical return to this sinful, rebellious, unbelieving, and unrepentant world. Surely, these are enormously devastating! Imagine an earthquake that could tear cities apart; that could pulverize and level mountains to the ground; that could cover the islands in must-be gigantic waves of tsunami. Moreover, think of the sun being enveloped with darkness; imagine the moon not being seen anymore; and reckon the heavens being shaken, the planetary objects violently swept from their trajectories!

Yes, these are all foretold in the Bible, and judging from this book’s prophetic accuracy, they are all going to happen. As to why they are happening, however, it would take another column to answer. It’s a long story, ideally to be presented chronologically or else readers would kind of get lost along the way.
