DOT steps up info drive for World Tourism Day
TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Tourism (DOT) is stepping up information drive on the importance of tourism in preparation for the World Tourism Day celebration on September 27.
Tourism officials led by DOT Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes have been invited in various gatherings designed to make Region 8 a more tourism-friendly area.
“The activity is generally advocacy. We joined various activities to advocate culture and tourism. We have been discussing values that we need to nurture so we can be known as champion of tourism,” Tiopes said.
The DOT regional chief has been invited to conduct lectures in various schools this month. Series of gatherings were held in different areas to reorient tourism establishments on statistics.
The National Tourism Week will run from September 21 to 27, 2012 with various activities being spearheaded by DOT field offices.
In Eastern Visayas, one of the highlights of the celebration is the launching of regional tourism sectoral plan in time with the Region Eight Administrator’s League assembly next week.
The World Tourism Day (WTD) is held annually on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value, the World Tourism Organization explained in its website.
The annual celebration seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to highlight the contribution the tourism sector can make in reaching these goals.
This year’s activity is anchored on the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development.” (SARWELL Q. MENIANO)
