Denying God’s existence

When a person denies the existence of God, he is said to be an atheist. In short, he does not believe in God. He is still a believer though he denies having faith—he believes that God does not exist; that’s his belief.

Atheism has a long history and has had innumerable followers. It cannot be determined how many they have been because faith and disbelief are intrinsic, and only God knows what one harbors in his heart. What the mouth says is not reliable either because words do not necessarily speak for the heart. The tongue is very deceitful and oozes with lies. One may be vocal about his unbelief, but down deep in his heart he believes otherwise, making his atheism partly hypocritical.

Reasons abound as to why people resort to atheism. There are those who fell victims to harsh realities, like surviving alone from a catastrophe that claimed the lives of other family members. Others are influenced by highly intellectual people. Some others are under diabolical influences and command, as is the case of those who practice witchcraft, sorcery, and the like, while the rest assume atheism out of pride, on account, perhaps, of their fame and intellectual superiority.

Whatever reason one has for embracing atheism, he has that right to practice and exercise his belief. He is in fact correct when he says there is no God. He is just telling the truth, because as far as he is concerned, God is not in him. So naturally, no God exists from his point of view. He is perfectly right. His saying so, however, doesn’t mean that God does not exist elsewhere. God does exist, of course, starting from the hearts of believers, on to the colossal universe, and beyond the vast outer space. This fact won’t change though the entire human race will deny it.

Viewed from the biblical perspective, denial of God’s existence is a normal tendency among people. According to the Bible, God created man in His own image. Since God is a tripartite being (three-in-one), creating man in His image resulted in a tripartite human being. Man, then, has body (world-consciousness), soul (self-consciousness), and spirit (God-consciousness). Man’s spirit, however, died at the Garden of Eden with Adam falling into sin. As this spiritual death was passed upon all men, man since then had not been conscious of God, making him conclude thus that God doesn’t exist at all.

Athe-ism as a natural tendency is nothing but a result of spiritual death. That’s why God, from the time humans existed, had revealed himself to man in many ways, such as through marvelous creations and miracles, just to make man aware that He exists as a supreme being. Finally, God revealed himself in human form, and that’s through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ who produced the free gift of salvation for mankind. By trusting and accepting Christ as Lord and savior, people are born again spiritually, saved and reconciled back to God.

This time, people have no more excuse not to believe in God who had already provided the antidote for our spiritual death and separation from Him. If a man opts to deny God today, it’s his own choice. Even if no one will demonize him for that, it is he who actually demonized himself, or made himself worse than demons, because while demons believe and tremble in the presence of God, he doesn’t, making himself the worst of unclean and rebellious spirits.

Given their choice, we might as well say that atheists should do away with partial atheism. It should be full and all the way, consistent. They should not also believe in water, in the food we eat, in the air we breathe, in the world we live in. Why? Because all these were handiworks of the God they don’t believe in. Better yet, they should create their own planet and live there. There is no point in denying God yet availing of His abundant provisions.
