Calbayog City set to celebrate 320th annual fiesta celebrations

TACLOBAN CITY- The people of Calbayog City is all set to celebrate its 320th annual fiesta celebrations this Saturday honoring its patron saint, Nuestra Señora de la Navidad.

City tourism officer Ronald Ricafort said that series of socio-cultural and religious activities have been lined up to mark this year’s city fiesta.

“As per message of the city mayor (Ronaldo Aquino), we are celebrating the fiesta in honor to the Almighty through our patron saint, Nuestra Señora de la Navidad, for all the blessings that the Calbayognos have received through all these years,” Ricafort said.

A Pontifical Mass is to be celebrated on the day of the fiesta at the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral to be officiated by Bishop Isabelo Abarquez.

Calbayog is the oldest and first to be created as a city in the entire Eastern Visayas.

Today, a civic-military and cultural parade is to be staged to enliven the annual city fiesta celebration. Participants, participants composed of the city government, students from private and public schools, police, military
and the private sector, are to sneak around the city’s major streets and to end at the City Hall stage.

City Mayor Aquino and his vice mayor, Rey James Uy, are to welcome the participants and the guests as well who include Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar, representing his mother, Cynthia Villar.

The historic Nijaga Park, for the past days and nights now, has been the site of various cultural and concert events. Among those who joined the nightly concert was Jamie Rivera of the Miss Saigon fame and the local artist, Naty Biliran.

Also, a fun run for Calbayog Rivers was staged as a way to remind the people to preserve the city’s water systems.

The country’s traditional games also took center stage participated by some schools in the city. This is to rekindle and reintroduce the young generation of the old but fun games aside from the games they now enjoy in the computer.

The beauty and brain Miss Anyag was also held at the Calbayog City Sports Center.(JOEY A.GABIETA)
