Businesswoman dies in Sta. Fe road mishap
TACLOBAN CITY- A businesswoman has died while nine others sustained injuries in a vehicular accident Monday night in Sta. Fe town, Leyte, some 30 kms away from this city.
Clotilde Astorga died on the spot when the passenger van they were riding hit a parked Isuzu cargo truck(with plate number HLT 535) at Barangay Tibak, three kilometers away from the town proper of Santa Fe.
Astorga, said to be the president of the Barugo Food Delicacies Producers Association based in Barugo town, Leyte, was seated next to the driver of the passenger van (VE 802), Jelson Obo, who is a resident of San Vicente, Tunga.
“She was crushed to death,” SPO2 Cyril Tan, chief investigator of the Sta. Fe police, said.
Injured in the 7 p.m. vehicular accident were Fausto Panis, Joanna Rodriguez, both of Jaro town; Luisa Bareto, Jona Tan, Delia Laure, all from Tunga town; Nathaniel Saludario, Lorena Guantero, both from Barugo; Ronnel Baldon and Jovelyn Tenorio, both from Carigara.
Astorga’s dead body was brought to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban, where the passenger van originated in going to Carigara town.
Also brought to the same hospital were Guantero, Tenorio and Laure for medical attention due to injuries they sustained.
The rest of the victims only suffered minor contusions, Tan said.
Tan said that based on their initial investigation, the passenger van was moving so fast while traversing along Tibak, hitting the parked cargo truck driven by Faustino Sonico.
Sonico, at the time of the accident, was fixing the vehicle’s signal lights when the passenger van rammed his vehicle.
Obo surrendered to the police authorities and now detained at their lock up cell, Tan said.
Charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple physical injuries were filed yesterday against the driver before the regional prosecutors’ office. (JOEY A. GABIETA, with a report from Christine Gresola- LNU Intern)
