The rich, the “Influential – ‘Great’ Men of Society” need the poor

Alvin Godinez Arpon

This is one reality in the world of the affluent for them to live a very privileged comfortable life, and the poor plays a very important role in that desire, albeit but just a few in our society. These few include the rich businessmen and the influential “great” men in Philippine society to include of course religious leaders like bishops.

Who will labor hard and long in the farms of the landed gentry? Who will the big-time businessmen employ as salesladies, house helpers, messengers, in their day to-day business activities?

Who will the bishops rely on to serve as sacristans, convent boys and labanderas to wash there costly large flowing robes and who will prepare sumptuous meals for them – in their sanctified abodes?

Where and from what levels in society will government and private establishment recruit as janitors and messengers?

The answer to these questions is they recruit them from the poor sector of our society. The middle income families do their house chores themselves if no cheap house helpers are available.

Unfortunately not all poor people in our midst can be accommodated in these establishments. The poor among us have become so many and continues to multiply that is resulting to abject poverty to thousands of Filipino families in our land.

This is aggravated by the stand of the Roman Catholic Church to populate the earth like rabbit breeders but let the State provide them food, clothing and shelters.

I do not know what happened to the Reproductive Health bill that was due for voting yesterday. We prepared this opinion column ahead of the voting. Whatever happened yesterday, the issue on population should seriously be considered.

We salute President Noynoy Aquino III for making a fearless stand on responsible parenthood, where others feared to tread ( by opposing the wisdom of the Catholic church on responsible parenthood)…that of providing the poor and less educated couples a choice on how to manage their families; limiting their children to a number they can afford to raise with adequate food, clothing, shelter and of course education.

The affluent in Philippine society are the ones who have limited their offspring because they know how to control
Child-bearing and by the way a good number of them have been baptized Roman Catholics and still are. Some of them are my friends and they attend mass and receive Holy Communion.
