Tacloban DZR Airport improvement raise positive outlook from people in EV
TACLOBAN CITY- The inclusion of the Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airport by President Benigno Aquino III during his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) as one of the airports in the country that will be improved elicited positive response from the people of Eastern Visayas.
One of which is Engr. Robert Castañares, president of Southern Leyte Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (SLCCI) who welcomed the good news and is very pleased with Pres.Aquino’s pronouncement. “The Eastern Visayas Chambers of Commerce and Industry (EVCCI)is very pleased the President’s giving priority to the airports of the cities of Tacloban and Maasin,” Castañares said in an interview.
The aggressive SLCCI is the lead convenor of the 13 Eastern Visayas chambers in the review and implementation of the regional development plan (RDP).
Castañares added that “more than the infrastructure, the CAAP airport manager should improve the operations of Tacloban airport because it looks like Divisoria during peak hours. The manager should act on the concerns raised by the chambers on unscrupulous drivers victimizing tourists and the disorganized transportation system. The EVCCI is of the impression that the manager is “either sleeping on the job or he is not up for his job.”
The CAAP(Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines) supervises the Tacloban aiport, among other similar facility in the country.
In a serious tone, Castañares said we will raise these issues with Secretary Mar Roxas next month if no improvement is done at the airport.
In a separate interview with Antonio Alfonso, area manager of CAAP Area 7, said that he is only one year in Tacloban and the first thing he did was addressed the transportation problem at the airport. “When I assumed office here, I immediately cancelled all the transport concessions in the airport. It’s disadvantageous on our part, but it’s the only
way to shape up the system. Just last week, three of our security officers are now deputized LTO enforcers. Shaping up the airport operations is not an overnight thing,” Alfonso added. (VICKY C. ARNAIZ)
