New airport terminal to rise soon – Cong. Romualdez

TACLOBAN CITY – Congestion in the departure area of Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airports here would soon be a thing of the past when construction of the new terminal building would be completed, probably early next year.

Leyte 1st Dist. Cong. Ferdinand Martin “FM” Romualdez assured not only the people of Eastern Visayas but also the tourists and businessmen who frequently visit Region 8, via Tacloban City Airport, that funds for the said project was already available and construction of a much bigger terminal building would soon be completed.

“We are very happy that even our President mentioned it on his State of the Nation Address. So, I would like to thank one and all for supporting this project. As representative of the first district, alongside with the mayor of Tacloban City, we are very, very much behind it.” Romualdez said.

Romualdez also expressed his gratitude to his fellow congressmen from Eastern Visayas as they were also instrumental in securing the needed funds for the said project. Cong. FM also stressed that the entire Region 8, from Samar, Southern Leyte, Biliran and other parts of the region are all using this airport, so we are all stakeholders here.

He explained that the implementation of this project was delayed because there are processes that had to be taken and evaluations that had to be made and the result yielded positive findings that the new terminal should be completed early next year.

“Although not that originally envisioned, but at least one that we hope will satisfy the passengers and other parties. It is for our comfort and efficiency to all those involved.” Cong. Romualdez added.

At present, five airline companies are regularly plying their route in Tacloban City Airport with 16 flights everyday. Last August 1, SeaAir flies from Manila Domestic Airport (NAIA Terminal 4) to Tacloban City.

“It would be a much larger area than we have now. Alongside would be offices, ticketing area and, of course, the arrival area. In terms of actual square footage and all that, the technical design, I believe is in its finalization stages.” Cong. Romualdez quipped.

Romualdez clarified that the international aspect of the airport is on hold because there are compliances that should be met and one of this is the extension of the runway. (MARVIN T. MODELO)
