Mannerism is understood to be an action that one does out of instinct, something that one doesn’t think of doing but does it anyway, often unintentionally, for having gotten used to doing it. As such, it could be done privately or even in public.
Some mannerisms are pleasant, amusing, and even cute, depending on a person’s dominant emotions, gender, inclinations, desires, etc. If a person is high-tempered, he may have his eyes glaring often, looking like a tiger. If he is a gay, he may be tossing his head left and right, bending his wrists and swinging his hips from side to side as he walks. If conscious of his looks, one may be fixing his hair all the time, even if he’s balding with just a few strands of hair left on his crown. These are rather funny.
But there are some mannerisms that really stink. Like some of them are offensive to tastes, morals, beliefs, and values. They are not just shameful and embarrassing; they also affect a person’s reputation, staining his family and other institutions or social groups that he represents.
A third year high school classmate of mine comes to mind for this.
This guy was wont to doing something that really put us, the rest of the boys, to shame and embarrassment. He was not so conscious of it, nor was he ashamed of doing it but we, the boys sharing his gender, were the ones who felt embarrassed for his mannerism.
Up to now, in fact, I still share the shame, hesitant to even write it here. Actually, we the boys in class kept telling this guy to stop and abandon that tendency, but he would just show us his uncivilized smile and would not discard it, even if the boys were already itching to beat him for that.
No problem if he was doing it only in private. But he didn’t really care even if people could see him. Worse, he seemed so at home doing it in the presence of girls, as though he was an exhibitionist. The girls, upon seeing his action, would immediately withdraw their eyes, look meaningfully at one another, and break into giggles and suppressed laughter. They may have been intrigued, curious, and perhaps equally embarrassed.
The most embarrassing of all was when, one day, he went to the front for a reporting activity. He had the attention of the whole class, all eyes feasting on him when he, out of instinct, inserted his right hand slowly into the front portion of his pants, obviously all the way to his genitals inside his underwear. Inside, his hand lingered a little bit, doing something only he could tell. When he pulled his hand out, he brought it to his nose as if to check the smell of his fingers.
Then he continued his talking as though nothing happened.
We almost rained him with our raging fists when we got out of the room after our class.
