“Spark an international backlash”?

Alvin Gz. Arpon

This is not to doubt the mind set of feisty and one who parades herself as the epitome and role model of what is proper and legal, Miriam Defensor Santiago. She unashamedly displayed this nauseating arrogance in her effort to save Renato Corona from being impeached. Of course she miserably failed.

Lately she prophesized, that the way the PNoy government is handling the former “President” that of being in jail while awaiting prosecution would spark an international backlash and to avoid this she must be put under house arrest. Surprisingly the same sentiment is echoed by my favorite Senator Gringo Honasan whose mind set is quite far distant and different to that of Miriam.

Yes, just I was about to finish re-writing this piece I read that Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, expressed the same misgivings. Am doubly surprised!

Gloria Arroyo got arrested for a grave electoral offense among other serious charges like graft and corruption, almost as soon as she stepped down from her “unearned” presidential perch. And yes, the international world knew immediately about it. That’s over a year since and we still have to hear any negative remark from leaders of other countries must less international media commentaries calling the attention of the Aquino administration about the issue. There was definitely no “international backlash” and I doubt if there will any be.

To my mind these wild and unfounded warnings aired by these elected public officials, euphemistically addressed people’s senators run counter to the spirit of accountability and an authentic color of real justice. This actually puts alive the dictum that no one is above the law under our democratic system. And the international democratic community welcomes it, definitely.

At this very moment we have earned much credit and laudable attention even commendation from the outside world when Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Renato C. Corona was impeached and found guilty by the impeachment court and was ousted from his post because of culpable violation of the Constitution, among others. A real big fish caught at last trapped by the web of good governance, “ matuwid na daan” battle cry of President Noynoy Aquino, III.

If GMA is finally found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of these serious charges committed against the Filipino people, Ms. Miriam, Mr. Gringo and Senate President Johnny should be assured that there will be no backlash, for whatever they meant by this, but praises, commendation and respect for our sovereignty as an independent and democratic nation. This country has already arrived to that point of credible governance long sought by our people!!!!

Of course I am in favor of a house arrest for GMA, and should not to be transferred at the Bilibid prison, the home of common criminals while undergoing trial. That would be too much. She has served the top post of the land and she should be afforded special treatment. She is a woman and quite sick. She deserves compassion and I am certain that the Filipinos will understand.

But if found guilty, let the law take its course.
