1 dead, 8 injured in vehicular accident in Catbalogan City
TACLOBAN CITY- A man died while eight others, including two minors, were injured in a vehicular accident in Catbalogan City on Wednesday afternoon.
Killed while undergoing medical treatment was Jonathan Martin, 29, driver of a motorcycle-for-hire (MCH) and a resident of Barangay Socorro, Catbalogan, Senior Supt. Avelino Doncillo, city police chief, said.
Martin’s MCH was hit by a cargo truck, which was loaded with sound system equipment and driven by Colas Trinchera who fled immediately after the accident, Doncillo, in a phone interview, said.
Based on their initial investigation, at around 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, the cargo truck with a plate number XHB 543 bound for Catarman, Northern Samar, while maneuvering a steep road section along Rizal Street, Brgy.12, Catbalogan City, lost its brake.
This resulted for the wayward vehicle to ram the motorcycle of Martin and another MCH, driven by Eduardo Obzunar, 40, married and a resident of Brgy.9, also in Catbalogan, which were then parked. Obzunar was also wounded.
The vehicle came to its stop, hitting a variety store owned by one Jose Nuñez, said to be the barangay chairman of Bry.12.
Two bystanders, Maria Made Aboganda, 27, single and a resident of Brgy.Pequit, Paranas town, also in Samar, and Dyson Chua, 14, of Brgy. Muñoz, Catbalogan, were hit and wounded during the accident.
The passengers of the two MCH vehicle, identified as Miriam Saludario,40, a government employee and a resident of Brgy.Canlapwas and Keana Faith Nuñez,14, of San Andres, both in Catbalogan, sustained injuries on their bodies, Doncillo said.
The other injured were identified as Arnold Realino, owner of the cargo truck and a resident of Abuyog, Leyte, and his helpers, Danilo Astorga, 43, single and a resident of Javier, Leyte and Jose Mendoza, 23, single of Calubian, Leyte.
All victims who sustained injuries and broken legs like Realino were brought to the Samar Provincial Hospital in Catbalogan for medical treatment.
Martin, who sustained head injuries, was brought to the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban but died while being treated, Doncillo said.
He said that they are now conducting manhunt operations against the driver. (JOEY A. GABIETA)
