Shot-in-the-arm for science teachers

High-Powered Objectives

A more concern to uplift the level of science culture in the Philippines, is the holding of yet another national conference for science teachers, science club advisers, department heads, principals, science coordinators, other science enthusiasts, and even laymen.

The forum had for its theme: “Advances in Science Gearing Up Toward Progress”, invited select resource speakers/persons to talk on topics such as Advances in Science: Its Implication to the New Curriculum; Chemical Synthesis of Peptide; Advances in Reproductive Health; Intensification in Agriculture, Biomedical Science and Therapeutic Health; Emerging Technologies; Gamma radiation with Polymer; Effect of Technological Advances to Philippine Culture and Environment; Inquiry-Based Science Teching; How to Conduct Investigatory Project; and, Developing a Keen Eye for Research.

The topics listed above were selected purposely “… to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the participants in applying advances in science to uplift and upgrade teaching and learning to meet the demands of science and technology education; explore new ideas based on advances in science research; and, strengthen linkages which will encourage the involvement of science enthusiasts to worthwhile science acivities which would gear up toward progress.”

The national gab on May 15-19, 2012 will be held at the La Vista Pansol Resort Complex in Pansol, Calamba City, Laguna. The forum organizer, Science Club advisers of the Philippines, Inc. (SCAAP), is ably supported by the Department of Education, AGHAM Party-List, and dzMM-ABS-CBN.

While this annual national science gab is a shot-in-the-arm toward improving science education and performance of Filipinos as well as nurture science culture in the four-corners of the country.

This writer has been advocating to bringing this kind of S & T activity closer to the regional level, most specially in the Visayas and Mindanao. It is for this reason that during his watch as Executive Director of National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP-DOST), he implemented an Outreach Program in select HUCs and HEIs in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, where science like LATIN is LATIN in the provinces!

Thus, this year SCAAP has chosen to hold the science forum in Luzon (Laguna), too far and too expensive for the Visayans and Mindanaoans. For these part of the country to benefit from the SCAAP’s well-intentioned activity, showed have considered holding it in the Visayas – more central and strategic area, instead. We should remember that the Imperial Manila-based academic institutions have been beneficiaries to the manna from the national and foreign experts, funding assistance, book donations, etc.!

The last two subject listed above, viz. How to Conduct Investigatory Project and Developing a Keen Eye for Research, were the same areas which the science teachers cum advisers of the Burauen Comprehensive National High School wanted to consult with this writer – himself an alumnus of then Burauen High School. This writer has committed to provide necessary assistance to strengthen the School’s performance in its desire to reach the provincial level in the science competition in Leyte.

This writer fervently wish that SCAAP, through its regional chapter (if any), should consider holding their 2013 national science gab in the Visayas – an if they choose Eastern Visayas, he will volunteer to be the Focal Person in organizing such activity!
