Tommy and Charivic: A silver wedding anniversary
“There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.” Martin Luther King
ORMOC CITY- It was one fun silver wedding anniversary that I attended with the bride and groom so happy and never stopped dancing until their last guest left the party at 2A.M. at the Rose Ballroom of Sabin Resort Hotel, Ormoc City last January 10, 2011. Fr. Victorino Japson, who gave a moving homily celebrated the mass and re-affirmed the couple’s commitment.
I am a romantic at heart, so when my good friend the gorgeous and brilliant Rosario “Charivic” Gorgonia, to attend her 25th wedding anniversary to her prince Tommy Serafica (still handsome and charming but double the weight this time- he is a good sport he humor his weight though), I cancelled all my appointments and off I went to Ormoc even if it was raining cats and dogs. Spending a quarter of a century loving, taking care and accepting a person for what he/she is no mean feat, this is a milestone worth celebrating.
Charivic, who was a radiant bride with a tiara on her head like a Princess shared to the crowd her letter to Tommy: “Marrying Tommy is a leap of fate and I just believed, trusted and was confident God will guide us. Tommy, you are not perfect but your mistakes compensate for the patience, love, honor and care you have for me and our children. I thank God for giving you to me.”
“In 1993 without Tommy knowing it, my most ardent dream was to be married again in Cana. When I shared it to him a year ago, it also became his dream. Last December 2011, together with other pilgrims, we were married in Cana. Many blessings and answered prayers came true in Jesus name.” It was met with applause by 300 kin and friends who filled the ballroom, some were teary eyed like me and my college buddies Henie Chua Gomez and Meliene Go Olimpo, Charivic’s super best friend and the original Maid of Honor.
In Christianity, the transformation of water into wine at the Wedding in Cana, Galilee is the first miracle of Jesus. The couple’s reaffirmation of their marriage in Cana, Hermie Serafica (the groom’s brother) offered a toast to the couple during his speech “May your marriage and honeymoon in Cana bear fruit,” was met with loud applause from everyone.
Handwritten love letters played a vital role, for love to blossom in the life of Tommy and Charivic with drivers of JD Bus Line as couriers. Tommy and Charivic were the best of friends for three years before they capped their friendship on January 10, 1987. Fun got on a roll when the children prepared an awesome audio-visual production of the evolution of Tommy and Charivic’s love affair.
In Tommy’s letter he read to Charivic, he revealed Charivic was very prayerful, a loving wife and mother to their children. “Before I go to sleep, I saw her praying. When I woke up in the middle of the night, I saw her praying. In the morning I still see her praying again, that’s how prayerful she is, and in his usual humorous banter he said “I don’t know if she ever sleeps.”
“Ambot lang asa ko karon if not for the Couples for Christ,” Tommy said in jest. They serve the Lord in the “Couples for Christ” for the last 20 years. Tommy also thanked his only mother in-law Mama Mila and his brothers-in-law. He also thanked his brothers, sisters and his deceased parents “I am not what I am today, if not also of how my parents brought me up.”
Charivic is not a close friend back then, she has her own barkada and I had mine. But today she is a very good friend, whose friendship blossomed—thank you to Facebook. And she has a wonderful family. She was our only summa cum laude in the graduating class at Divine Word University, Tacloban City.
Teling Pangilinan, Tommy’s sister and Charisse, the couple’s only girl are the event organizers from the design of the invitation, to the sumptuous dinner and overflowing drinks. Charisse is now an Occupational Therapist with a private clinic in Ormoc and brothers Francis is a registered Nurse and Jet, a senior Hotel and Restaurant Management student.
The happy occasion has non-stop dancing and singing with the band provided by the Men ‘n Stripes of Msgr. Damayo. The couple’s good friend celebrity Congresswoman Lucy Torres Gomez and her family just secure a table in a corner as not to catch the attention of everyone and steal the limelight from the couple. Dr. Jaime Gatchitorena (who recently celebrated his own golden wedding anniversary) and Linda Galapon graced the occasion. They were the original ninong and ninang in their 1987 wedding. Lovely Jettka and Mara friends of Jet Serafica were the photographers.
We were billeted in the hotel-like St. Peter’s and Paul’s Parish convent. Thanks to my very good friend Father Gilbert Urbina and Sister Anne. I met Father Jun of Isabel and Fr. Mark from Spain too.
A good friendship, romance and lasting love a good excuse from talking politics and the Corona impeachment these days. To Tommy and Charivic: here’s to more happy and loving years of togetherness! Cheers!
