TACLOBAN CITY – The Financial Literacy Roadshow on Microinsurance Advocacy will be opened to the general public on Friday in a bid to raise awareness on insurance products designed to benefit low income groups.
“We are calling the people in Region 8 to take part in this roadshow. We will hold an orientation seminar on microinsurance for the public on September 23 at the Leyte Park Hotel,” said Joselito Almario, deputy executive director of the finance department’s National Credit Council (DOF-NCC).
Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran will be the keynote speaker. Insurance Commission Commissioner Emmanuel Dooc and Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez will also speak during the activity.
Almario said that this is a good opportunity for the public to learn about insurance and change the mindset that this risk protection program is only for those in the higher class.
The official added that under this scheme, signing up for microinsurance will be affordable with as low as P30 a month premium, one page contract, and claiming benefits within two days.
Through enabling microinsurance policies and regulations, there is now a greater availability of life and non-life insurance products provided by commercial insurance companies, mutual benefit associations and cooperative insurance societies.
The one-week roadshow in Eastern Visayas is the first in the 16 regions nationwide. During the first three days, future advocates were gathered for training. Today’s orientation are devoted for government officials.
The nationwide advocacy is scheduled to grace seven cities in Luzon, three in Visayas, and six in Mindanao from 2011 to 2012.
The initiative is being pushed by the Insurance Commission in partnership with DOF-NCC, German International Cooperation -Microinsurance Innovations Program for Social Security and the Asian Development Bank – Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction. (Sarwell Q. Meniano)
