Calbayog City mayor says preparation for EVRAA now in full-swing

CALBAYOG CITY – This city is now ready to host this year’s Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet that is to be held on January 30 to February 4.

Thus said Mayor Reynaldo Uy when asked on the status of the preparation that they are doing relative to the staging of the regional sporting event.

EVRAA Meet is the regional sporting event of the Department of Education to select qualified athletes to compete with the biggest sporting event which is the Palarong Pambansa to be held in Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte.

Ten athlete’s delegations from the 10 DepEd schools divisions coming from four cities and six provinces in the region will be joining the said event and will compete with 18 disciplines of sports that include archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football, gymnastics, softball, sipa, sepak takraw, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

Among the venues that are to be used for the EVRAA are Calbayog City New Land Transport Terminal, Calbayog City Joggers Covered Court, Calbayog City Sports Center Barangay Carmen and Barangay San Policarpo Covered Court, North Western Samar State University Gymnasium, Athletic Oval, Field, Sepak Takraw, Sipa and Volleyball couts, La Milagrosa Academy Auditorium, Christ the King College Auditorium and Marju Kristel Resort Swimming Pool.

For the billeting of the contingents, Uy said that schools to be used are theCalbayog Pilot Central School for Leyte Division delegation; Carayman Elementary School for the delegations of Ormoc City; Trinidad Elementary School for the Biliran delegations; San Policarpo Central Schol for the Samar delegations; Calbayog City SPED Center for the Southern Leyte delegations; Calbayog Easter Central School for the Calbayog City delegations; Calbayog National High School for the Northern Samar delegations; Trinidad National High School for the Eastern Samar delegations, Christ the King College for the Tacloban City delegations and the Calbayog East Central School for the technical officiating officials of EVRAA.

Mayor Uy added that the city government had allocated P5 million to be used for the entire six- day competition while the representative from the 1st district of Samar Congressman Mel Senen Sarmiento had pledged to give P500, 000 as additional financial support to the city government in the hosting the EVRAA.

As the region is currently experiencing heavy rainfall that affects both Samar and Leyte island, Mayor Uy said if there will be an occurrence of heavy rainfall on the day of competitions, it is not the city government who will decide whether or not the EVRAA competitions will continue but the committee formed by the DepEd and the Calbayog city government.
