DepEd issues memo on giving of assignments
TACLOBAN CITY — The DepEd City Division is implementing the memorandum signed and issued by Secretary of Education Br. Armin A. Luistro dated September 16, 2010.
DepEd Memorandum No. 392, s. 2010 is about the guidelines on giving homework or assignments to all Public Elementary School Pupils. It is prohibiting the teachers from giving assignments to the pupils during weekends. The teacher is only allowed to give assignments to the pupils from Monday to Thursday of the week.
This memorandum was issued because of the factor that when pupils are given loaded assignments even during weekends they will not have quality time to spend with their parents and have less time to enjoy their leisure time which is supposed to be spent in playing and enjoying their childhood.
The said memorandum was the response or the answer of the Department of Education to the parent’s concern, thus said by Carmela R. Tamayo, the Assistant Superintendent of DepEd Tacloban City Division.
Tamayo also expressed her reaction regarding this National Policy not to give assignments during weekends. According to her, as a parent she agrees with this policy because children really need quality time to bond with their family. Professionally speaking, as a school administrator I believe that giving of assignment will reinforce the knowledge of the pupils, in this case our teachers will have to give more efforts in the daily discussion.
This memorandum will take its effect as soon as the School Supervisors and Public teachers receive the DepEd Memo, which was sent to the 40 Elementary Public Schools in the City of Tacloban last Monday. (MARICHI M. MULLON, LNU Intern)
