Oppositions to Truth Commission employ dilly-dally tactics
Credible surveys in recent past revealed that majority of Filipinos believe that the GMA government that has just exited committed unlawful acts that created monsters of corrupt personalities of that regime resulting in the sad depletion of hard-earned resources of government. The overwhelming support by the Filipino voters for the election of President Noynoy Aquino III was primarily based on his campaign slogan “kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.”
The creation of the TRUTH Commission is precisely what the President believes as a way to re-discover how the abuse on graft and corruption were cleverly made and in the final analysis provide prosecuting agencies the evidence for GMA and her allies who may have been involved in the many corrupt practices they committed and hopefully be correspondingly meted punishment if found guilty. The Commission will also be expected to draft recommendations to strengthen the nation’s statutes that will neutralize if not ultimately cure this cancer that affects our existence as a people and as a nation and with fervent prayers it does not happen again.
Surprisingly Political Opposition lawmakers Edcel Lagman of the House of Representatives and Joker Arroyo of the Senate revealed that the Truth Commission is illegal and therefore unconstitutional and vowed to stop its creation by filing a resolution against it before the Supreme Court.
These two solons used to be growling tigers that challenged every move of the despotic regime of President Marcos on issues of graft and corruption and all sorts of alleged misgovernance of that regime. The Marcoses were driven out of the country via People Power in the 1986 of what was internationally dubbed as peaceful revolution on issues and grounds similar to what the GMA administration allegedly committed. It is very surprising why these two decent politicians do not see the parallelism. We suspect they could be satiated beneficiaries of that hated regime, otherwise why have they lost claws and fangs they successfully employed in their fight against Marcos. It’s purely a dilly-dally tactics.
